Piracy of S.S. Saina: 24Depositions of witnesses, etc.

Enclosure No. 2 in Consul-General Mansfield's No. 36 of

17th. July, 1906.

Captain Joslin, duly sworn, stated:-

Had dinner at 8.30 p.m. About 7 or 7.10 p.m. we came outside with the Doctor, and I saw the Indian Watchman running for all he was worth followed by a Chinaman trying to get the Indian's Revolver. I tried to get his

Revolver but could not do it. I believe 1 knocked the Chinanan down; then the

Chinaman made a run aft and the first thing I knew he shot at me point blank

with his own Revolver, Dr. MacDonald was alongside and I said I was shot. The

Doctor said "come inside" and tried to probe the wound. Then they started to

fire at us. Then I said "it is no use stopping here", and I fell under the

table. Then they threw a "stink-pot" into the cabin and then we got out on the

starboard side. The Doctor said "lay down". I was exhausted; the Doctor lay

down to avoid shots; shots were flying all over the ship. Then a Chinanan came

along put a shot through the Doctor and I fell into the cabin to lay down

dead. Then they came in and said "chun chu" (Captain) and kicked me to see

whether I was alive and seeing the wound, said "he is dead". They kicked me

three or four times and took a ring off my finger. I lay down quietly and

they came in again and gave us several more kicks. Then they took the ship I

dont know where. Then they broke up Dr. MacDonald's gear and some medicine.

The Chinese got hold of my jacket and pulled it and the pants off and they

saw my wound and said "he is dead". Then after a while I heard the telegraph

and windlass go and concluded they had left. Then the Chief Engineer care to

me. They wanted to kill me und Chief; the steward said so. The steward said he

was a passenger må would not give me away. I then resured command. The Chief

said the pirates had gone. I stopped on the way at Lung Ki, Mahning, Kumchuk

and Kaukong. At the latter place so extra number of passengers came on board.

There were 26 passengers from Kaukong. They took the steamer up some creek and

anchored there. The Chinaman who shot me was well dressed like a second class

passenger.
